Likutey Halakhos, Yoreh Deah 1, Ribis 5, Para. 28-30a. אמת – Finding Truth is a Process; Simchas Torah and Parshas VeZos HaBerakha – Last Possuk in the Torah; Broken Luchos; VaEira – Reluctance of Moshe Rabbeinu. Speaker: Rabbi Nasan Maimon.
Hilkhos Ribis 5 is based on Likutey Moharan 51.
00:00 – PARAGRAPH 28. Simchas Torah and Parshas Zos HaBerakha. אֲשֶׁר֙ עָשָׂ֣ה משֶׁ֔ה לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל – “…which Moshe performed before the eyes of all Israel” (Devarim 34:12, Zos HaBerakha). The last possuk in the Torah alludes to Moshe Rabbeinu breaking the Luchos HaBris by throwing them down to the ground. This was an aspect of “Truth was cast to the earth”.
06:35 – אמת – Hashem’s truth is revealed in the world by Am Yisrael – the People of Israel. “There’s no such thing as a Torah without the Jewish People.”
*08:44 – Why we join the last words of the Torah immediately with the first words “Bereishis Bara Elokim” are sofei teyvos Emes. Breaking the first luchos made it possible for Am Yisrael to begin serving Hashem all over again through every generation.
09:38 – A guest is obligated to obey the wishes of his host, except if asked to leave.
12:30 – תָּשֵׁ֣ב אֱ֖נוֹשׁ עַד־דַּכָּ֑א – “You bring man to the crushing point…” (Tehillim 90:3). A person can return to Hashem even from the lowest level.
13:12 – Q&R about the creation of the world through midas hadin – the attribute of justice.
14:15 – Q&R about a guest’s obligation to his host.
14:39 – PARAGRAPH 29. A judge who faithfully rules on a decision of law is functioning as a partner with Hashem.
20:20 – Q&R about tempering judgement with compassion. The Sanhedrin never put a criminal to death. Analogy brought from Sipurey Masiyos, The Master of Prayer.
27:06 – 48 ways to acquire Torah: the importance of shimush chochomim – observing and supporting one’s Torah teacher. We learn how to temper judgement with compassion by emulating the actions of tzaddikim.
29:40 – Q&R about how an unmarried woman can observe and support a tzaddik.
31:24 – Q&R about the last possuk quoted in the previous paragraph. אחד – one – Reference to Likutey Moharan 4.
32:26 – Story about Reb Yudel ז”ל who, when he first met Rebbe Nachman, spoke with slight disrespect. To repair this – the Rebbe explained to him how it’s possible to turn sheker into kesher.
34:26 – Q&R about how a married woman can observe and support a tzaddik.
34:52 – PARAGRAPH 30. Parshas VaEira – Moshe Rabbeinu’s reluctance to take a leadership role in Am Yisrael.וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־משֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: וָֽאֵרָ֗א אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֛ם אֶל־יִצְחָ֥ק וְאֶל־יַֽעֲקֹ֖ב בְּאֵ֣ל שַׁדָּ֑י וּשְׁמִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה לֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖עְתִּי לָהֶֽם – “Hashem spoke to Moshe, and He said to him, “I am Hashem. I appeared to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Yaakov with [the Name] A – D – N – Y, but [with] My Name Y – K – V – K, I did not become known to them.” (Shemos 6:2-3, VaEira). Finding truth is a process.
39:54 – וַיְנַסּ֣וּ אֹתִ֗י זֶ֚ה עֶ֣שֶׂר פְּעָמִ֔ים – “…yet they have tested me these ten times…” (Bamidbar 14:22, Shelach).
43:05 – The yetzer hara draws its power from the angels’ opposition to the creation of man.
43:49 – Moshe Rabbeinu’s confrontation with Pharaoh.
46:03 – The “truth” of Dasan and Aviram seemed reasonable. Even the greatest tzaddik can be affected by the defective אמת that originated in the angels’ objection to the creation of man.
50:12 – This mistake about the nature of truth occurs in every generation. “The Ivy League is Poison Ivy.”
*51:05 – Q&R about connecting with Breslov traditions and applications of Rebbe Nachman’s teachings via contemporaries.
55:00 – Closing blessings.
